Secure Your Website

What is HTTPS?

HTTPS, or Hypertext Transfer Protocol with an "S" at the end for "secure",  is the form of encryption that secures communication between a user's web browser and a web server.

If your website is non-secure HTTP, your visitors may interpret your website as being compromised or having underlying issues not relating to HTTPS.

Why Do I Need HTTPS?

Traditionally HTTPS was only considered necessary for websites transferring sensitive data, such as financial institutions and e-commerce sites collecting credit card details.

However in recent years internet security has been an increasing issue. Google has been at the forefront of the drive to secure the internet for the last several years. So much so that Google has updated it's algorithms to rank the sites that use HTTPS above non-secure HTTP sites. This has accelerated the move for all sites to adopt HTTPS.

Therefore HTTPS is strongly recommended for all websites looking to reassure their visitors, secure their site, establish a higher search ranking, and futureproof their online presence.

5 Reasons to Switch to HTTPS Now

1. "Not Secure"

Google Chrome is used by two-thirds of the world's internet users. In July of 2018, Chrome will start displaying non-HTTPS websites using a red warning icon.

Currently Chrome is displaying non-secure websites with an info bubble icon.

2. Good for Search

It's no surprise that Google prefers sites that are more secure. Every second, websites are battling for the top listing on Google's search rankings. Securing your website with HTTPS will enable you to get a leg up on your competition. Here are the reasons why:

  • HTTPS sites load much faster than HTTP sites, resulting in a higher search ranking.
  • Although only about 1% of today's websites are secure (this is a serious advantage over your competitors!), approximately 40% of Google's page one organic listings are HTTPS sites
  • HTTPS has been a factor in Google's search ranking alghorithims since 2014

3. AMP Requires HTTPS

AMP stands for Accelerated Mobile Pages. It's a technology that makes certain websites load almost instantaneously on mobile phones. You can identify a site that's AMP-ready by looking for a lighting bolt. While Google already favors a fast mobile site, it gives AMP sites special treatment. Google shows AMP sites before any other in search results. To use AMP, your site must have HTTPS first.

4. Confidentiality

One common misconception about HTTPS is that only banks and other institutions passing sensitive data need it. In fact, HTTPS prevents anyone from passively listening to communications and data transfer between your site and your user's web browser. Every unprotected HTTP transmission could reveal data, sensitive information, and personal data about your users.

5. Website Integrity

HTTPS protects more than just confidentiality. It also provides what website administrators call "integrity". In short, integrity means that a website can be authenticated: to prove they are who they say they are, prove their identity. HTTPS provides integrity because a website administrator must go through a process to prove the website as legit before an SSL certificate, a cryptographic key that can't be forged, can be issued for an HTTPS site.

HTTPS prevents malicious attackers from tampering with communication between your website and your user's browser. For example, a non-HTTPS site can be intercepted in order to inject ads into your website or steal your users sensitive data. Intruders can exploit any unprotected from your website, such as Images, HTML, or cookies. They can even change the content of the articles on your site. HTTPS ensures the content of your website can't be altered.
